jAlbum version 35 will not Make some albums
Posted: 2 Aug 24, 18:04

I have just reverted to jAlbum 34 because when I tried to make (compile) most albums with version 35, but especially those with a large number of "Web location" pages, it would hang. I had one smaller album trying to compile all night last week and it still was hung about 2/3 through the next morning. I was wondering if anyone else has this problem.

Using version 34, a very large album compiled in under 10 minutes. The album I had been trying to compile this morning that would not "make" in version 35 compiled in under 5 minutes in version 34.

Can you try excluding half of the weblocations, make album? If no change include them and exclude the other half. If either exclusions works narrow it down to problem weblocations.

The other thing that might be useful is to turn on the "watchdog" - Tools > Preferences > Advanced > Use watchdog. Then, when an album build hangs for a long time, open the configuration directory - Tools > Open directories > Config directory, grab the thread-dump.txt file that's sitting there, and attach it here.

David may be the only one who can interpret the output, however - it's pretty arcane.

I will give that a try tomorrow. I'll let you know.

Attachment thread-dump.txt (88.5 KB)
I had one try to compile all night. It did not, nor did it give me a thread-dump.txt file. So, this morning, I made a new album by removing about half of the Web Location files. It also will not compile, but I did get this thread-dump.txt file (attached).

The problem seems to be that if there are more than one or two Web Location files, the y will not compile in version 35.0.2.

Tried, it made no difference. jAlbum version 35.0.2 just does not like Web location files.

Perhaps the thread dump will give David some clues.

But there's no general issue with web locations in jAlbum 35. I've got a demo album with a dozen of them (and nothing else - the project is all web locations), and it builds instantly, without complaint, with either one of my own skins or with Tiger. So, there must be something else going on here.

In the meantime, a few random things....

First, please attach the jalbum-settings.jap file from one of your "problem" projects. I can't imagine any particular settings causing this kind of problem, but it would be good to be able to replicate your project settings.

Second, try building a little test project, starting with just a handful of web locations. Import the project settings from one of your big projects, just to ensure that you're comparing apples to apples. Does it make an album?

Last, and this is a total WAG, try reducing the number of processing threads. Tools > Preferences > Advanced > Number of threads. Cut it in half, and see if that helps. It will be slower, but it might avoid other problems.

This is the one that never advanced (compiled) all night last night.

Well, that's one hunch to cross off the list. With those project settings, I get a working album, in 1.2 seconds.

So, I cut the number in half as you suggested and then did a Make on the one I sent you. It spun for over 10 minutes. After the first minute, though, it told me it had 52 minutes to go. After that 10 minutes, it processed about half the files, then hung again. As I was typing this, it completed and displayed a processing time of 13:59. (Yeah right - NOT!)

Don't get hung up on the progress indicator that displays during album build. It's just an approximation, and with a project that's anything other than "just a bunch of images," it can make only rough guesses about how long the remaining build will take. And with multi-threading going on, the indication of "what I'm working on now" is usually wrong. What looks like "hung up" may be nothing of the sort.

The only reliable processing time number, when the build is complete, is the one shown in the system console. See the last line in this screenshot, for example.

So it did build the album, right? Were there any errors? Any "warning triangle" in the lower right corner? Is the resulting album fully functional?

Yes, album is okay. I'll continue to compile with the threads cut in half, which is 3. I'll see how it goes for the next few days when I Make albums with several Web location pages.

Try it at 4 threads. But if jAlbum defaulted to 6 threads, that suggests that your PC is somewhat on the "old and slow" side. You might want to start saving your pennies for something new and shiny. :)

If the PC can't handle having all its cores used simultaneously, that could indicate something fairly obscure, like a faulty chunk of RAM. Might be worth testing, though it's a slow process, and of course, you can't use the machine for anything while it's running.

It might be worth checking if background mode is on, and if so turn it off.
