duplicate photos and missing photos in the publish folder
Posted: 20 Oct 23, 16:19

Hello everyone,

For some time now I have had the problem that some photos are displayed twice in the published folder, or that a photo is missing here and there. However, everything is displayed correctly in the jAlbum software. I can't find the problem in the folder on the hard drive either. Here the photos are also displayed as in the software. I tried jAlbum 30.0.4 and 32.1.

The duplicate photos are in the front third of the album and at the end.

Attached are 2 photos from the published album. 1 photo of the software.

Looking at your lifeboat file (I can't tell anything from screenshots), I see 35 images listed in the Fotos auf dem Jahr 2023 folder, and that's exactly how many I see on that album page. There are no duplicates, and nothing seems to be missing.

Make sure your do a hard refresh of your browse cache when viewing the album - CTRL-F5 in most browsers.

I clear the cache after every upload. Unfortunately it doesn't help. For example, in the comparison between the software screenshot and the published folder, the first 2 photos are missing and have been replaced by duplicate photos located at the end of the folder.

Do you have a screenshot of what your publish folder looks like?

But I think I do know what's causing havoc. It appears that some of your file names are using the "pipe" symbol. That's not a legal character in a file name, and is almost guaranteed to cause problems.

For example, I see these two lines in your albumfiles.txt file:
628 150 - EVB.jpg 1697806282	1685290466
628 150 | EVB.jpg 1697808264	1694240092
That second entry is not a legal file name. It's difficult to tell what will happen when it's included in a project.

ETA: In fact, I can't even test it. jAlbum won't let me use that as a file name, and Windows won't let me do it, either!

BTW, unrelated, but you're using a couple of settings that simply make your slide image files huge, but without making them any clearer or sharper. On the Images settings, going beyond 85% JPEG Quality is just a waste of bytes. And choosing HiDPI Images is totally useless, since your originals aren't large enough to produce double-density image files.

In a double-blind test (i.e., you don't know in advance which version is which), you'd never be able to tell the difference.

the vertical bar “|” was actually the problem. I replaced it with a "-". The export from Lightroom was to blame. Apparently I have to look at the settings again so that this doesn't happen anymore. Thank you for the quick help.

They can be used when adding files but not when naming files within jAlbum. The top image in the first post, https://jalbum.net/forum/servlet/JiveServlet/download/34-59360-364081-24347/Bildschirmfoto%202023-10-20%20um%2015.51.19.png
shows every image has a warning triangle, the last few have two!

Thanks for the tip, what settings should I best make here under JPEG?

The 2nd triangle indicated a problem with the web name, but I couldn't think of anything about it. But now I know what that meant.

Yes, when I looked more closely, that caught my attention. In Java and Javascript, a "|" is a bit-wise OR operator. Guaranteed to cause mayhem when it's encountered in an unexpected place!

I usually stick to 75% JPEG Quality, but 85% is OK if you want to be sure you're not losing anything in the scaling. I usually add a touch of sharpening, like 25%. You can go higher on sharpening if your subject matter is all landscapes, buildings, and trains, but for albums with people, more sharpening can give their faces a hard edge that's unpleasant. I keep it low, just to be safe.

And turn off HiDPI images. HiDPI thumbnails are fine, especially in the more modern skins, but for the slide images, it's overkill.

yes, that led to this chaos for me, where photos appeared twice even though they only existed once and other photos were therefore not displayed.
A few weeks ago I switched from Windows 11 to Mac OS and as a result the correct setting in Lightroom was not made in the export. But I changed this and now have to export the infected files again.
