Yes, that is the thumbnail suggested by the client when the album was uploaded. Since that one failed at upload time the server doesn't recheck it now. It won't happen now since webp will work when uploading.
Just tried to change the URL now (from thumbs to slides) and click save and that made the thumbnail work.

Seems that the server generated album.rss isn't used for albums hosted here when changing thumbnail. So a real album.rss file is required (also for the old JPEG thumbnails).

Ah, yes. I opened the old project, switched to a different thumbnail, and uploaded again. This time, it picked up the new WebP thumbnail without complaint.

But I still get the same error when trying to change the album image from my profile page. I can give it a different one, but it can't extract one on its own.

No, it works just fine when I try to change the thumbnail for a JPG album. Try my playlist album, for example. No RSS file there, either.
