Jalbum 25 java crash when making album

Getting this crash when generating an album in JAlbum 25:

An unexpected error occurred. Please see detailed description below:
 
java.lang.NullPointerException
	at se.datadosen.jalbum.AlbumBean.getProjectProperties(AlbumBean.java:2959)
	at se.datadosen.jalbum.AlbumBean.makeAlbum(AlbumBean.java:2994)
	at se.datadosen.jalbum.AlbumBean.smartMakeAlbum(AlbumBean.java:2943)
	at se.datadosen.jalbum.JAlbumFrame$6.run(JAlbumFrame.java:1141)


Using MacOS, built-in Tiger skin 3.6.3 and 3.7.0 (not sure if it's a Tiger issue based on the error).

Error occurred on both version 25 and 25.0.6, on both an Intel MacBook Pro and an M1 Mac Pro, also both on MacOS Monterrey and Big Sur.

I'm using jAlbum 25.0.8, Tiger 3.7.0 and OS X 11.6 (Big Sur) with no issues.
Try building the Sample Portfolio project, if that works try following the essential debugging steps at https://jalbum.net/forum/ann.jspa?annID=204

I did the Sample Project and it worked fine.

Tried a bunch of random skins and styles and every single one of them give the same error.

Seems this is only happening with the default settings "empty project"; the settings that load when you go to File - Save As Default.

Saving the exact settings as a separate named project and selecting it on the list works just fine.

Not sure if this will help, but you could try resetting the defaults. If you do, keep a copy of the existing defaults, for further debugging and to restore your setup later.

Defaults are stored in the configuration folder, https://jalbum.net/help/en/JAlbum/Menus#Open_directories

Nope, didn't do anything. On top of that, resetting defaults actually did not work at all. I had to manually delete the default file to get it to go back to the default settings.

Once I did, I tried to make an album and got the same exact error message.

I tried reseting my defaults and creating a new project with Tiger, no problem. Please wait for David to respond, he has said before that there are numerous possible causes of NullPointerExceptions. But if the error is repeatable for you he may have some ideas for solving the issue.

I'll post a bug report about the external tool not working.

Odd. It's like if you don't have an open project while making the album. The Nullpointer exception is triggered by the root folder of the current project being missing, but how can that be? It should not be possible with an open project.

Would saving a new project before making the album be a likely short term fix?

I can reproduce this problem if I follow these steps:
  • Open jAlbum
  • Open settings
  • Enter a valid path for "Image directory"
  • Close settings
  • Make the album

I've now fixed this. Do a core update (Tools->External tools->jAlbum core update) to apply the fix.

You're welcome. Did you create your project in the same manner that I did in my example above? I generally recommend dropping an image folder onto jAlbum to get a project quickly set up.
