Reprocessing after adding title or keyword

Hi,

1) Open the „Sample portfolio" album;
2) Add a new folder with pictures, the more pictures the better;
3) Compile the album;

4) Now add for all of your previously added pictures a comment;
5) Compile again;
6) No problem so far;

7) Now add for all of your previously added pictures a title;
8) Compile again;
9) WOW! What is going on here, all your previously added pictures are reprocessed!

10) Now add for all of your previously added pictures a keyword;
11) Compile again;
12) WOW! What is going on here, all your previously added pictures are reprocessed!

I have no idea why it should be necessary to reprocess pictures if you just added, edited or deleted a title or keyword. Btw, videos are not reprocessed.

Can you confirm you do NOT have 'Include photographic data in images' or 'Include xmp metadata in generated images' checked - Settings>Advanced>Metadata.

No, I can't confirm that. Both options are checked. By choosing the Sample portfolio album I tried to make sure to just use the default options in the default album which came right from the developer, so, no fancy options are involved.

Looking at the timestamps on the slide images in the output, that's not happening when I try it. It doesn't matter whether I add comments or titles to the images - the other slide images remain as they were the first time I made the album.

Remember, too, that the project setting in the Sample Portfolio is to include XMP metadata in the generated images, so if you add a title to an image, that image will be processed again, because the XMP metadata have changed. (Not sure why at the moment, but new comments are being written to the input image, but not to the output - that needs a little exploration.)

Have you been time-traveling again?

Strange, Include photographic data in images is not a default setting for jAlbum or the Sample Portfolio.

No I haven't. I've seen this behaviour for several weeks and months now, during a phase where I added a lot of keywords to thousands of pictures at once. Recompiling the album again took quite a long time, and uploading of course even more, 12 GB instead of just less that 100 MB.

Uh, sorry! I was wrong, the option Include photographic data in generated images is not checked. But the option Include xmp metadata in generated images is included.

Right, that is the correct default then

More testing.... Adding a title or keyword to an image triggers reprocessing of that image, as expected. But adding a comment does not - I've posted a bug report.

In no case are untouched images reprocessed, however.

It's likely that I made this design choice for simplicity. I know it isn't the most ideal approach though.

I'm coming back to this issue, because the other day I simply added one keyword to hundreds of photos and there were all reprocessed and of course upload. I still don't understand this. Is that really how things should work? Thanks, Markus

Yes, I don't understand the logic, either. I've unchecked both of the "include in processed images" choice for metadata, so there's no metadata change that should trigger reprocessing of the images. Changing the comment doesn't cause reprocessing, which is correct. But changing title or keywords does, and there's no reason for it.

Have you unchecked the writing of xmp metadata to files? That could explain it. jAlbum will then only write the comments to the comments.properties file.

Even if it does write the xmp metadata to the input files, why would it need to reprocess the images? Why would a new title necessitate a new output JPG?

This is happening with the settings as shown.

ETA: And a new comment does not trigger a new JPG, regardless of the preferences setting.

It may be the case that I "accidentally" touch the last modified date when changing titles, but not when changing comments. I'll investigate. You're right that there's technically no need to reprocess a JPEG just because its metadata has changed, but I believe we touch the last modified date no matter if the image- or metadata has changed. It's probably better to leave the last modified date alone (actually restore it) when updating metadata only.
