My WAG is the .rss files are related to exif data in some way, maybe related to establishing the make / model of camera used for photos.

No, they clearly have something to do with RSS, but that's a functionality that's gradually disappearing from the interwebs. More than any normal person wants to know about it:

I think the semi-automatic "mobile view" that jalbum.net provides, rather than showing the album with its native skin, is still relying on RSS files, but I don't think it's used for anything else. And if you're using a modern, responsive skin, you should have the mobile view disabled, anyway.

I just tried deleting the RSS files in my config file. Upon relaunching jAlbum, album19.rss reappeared, so jAlbum thinks it needs it for something. But it certainly doesn't need the older versions.

I'll try renaming the older versions and test before deleting.

Some of my older albums might still be pre-responsive - not sure about that. I went through a massive re-do of albums a few weeks ago. Firstly to put them into a responsive skin. Secondly, to save space on my hosting service. My "makes" had included uploading original files. With the new makes, I set to link to scaled down images only, keeping originals if needed. This reduced the size of my albums from, collectively, ~131 Gb to 1.1 Gb, a 92% reduction in size! I had started with Chameleon and KAlbum (KDE).

My last, space-saving job is moving an old collection of pics from Spain composed as an OpenOffice Impress slide show, to a jAlbum. That sucker is BIG but it will be a monumental task to transfer all those images and captions to a new applications. I may never make it.
