I am very interested in GraalJS because Mirage uses Nashorn to process Zif files. I looked at GraalJS a few months ago, but I was unsure how to get started.
To try out Graal JavaScript within jAlbum, download http://jalbum.net/download/GraalJS.zip and unzip to the "ext" folder of jAlbum's config folder (see Tools->Open directories->Config). If the "ext" folder is missing, just create it. Now start jAlbum. Open jAlbum's system console to verify that GraalJS has kicked-in - there should be a new Graal JavaScript entry for the languages/engines now. Now try making an album using the attached JavaScript version of the Minimal skin. It should now use Graal JavaScript. Open the system console to confirm this. It should print "Getting modified GraalVM engine" (the Graal JavaScript engine takes precedence over Nashorn). You will also notice that our main JavaScript based skins no longer work (Tiger, PhotoBlogger etc), but we will update them to support Graal JavaScript too.

I'm happy that Flat L&F is so well received by you. I've picked 4 out of a large number of themes already available for it. To see the other themes, download and run the demo from https://www.formdev.com/flatlaf/#demo (you just need Java installed, then double click the .jar file).

Is 20.3 PixyMeta going to be included, with support for regions in PNG?

I plan on doing so, but I'll keep Apache Sanselan for JPEGs for safety.

...the other old look&feels are part of Java....
But you're not required to use them, are you? Metal and Nimbus are very dated, but at least they aren't terrible. On the other hand, CDE/Motif is a disaster - almost unreadable - and Windows Classic is actually tough to tell apart from regular Windows.
ETA: I'd never noticed it before, but NetBeans offers all of the built-in Java L&F's, so maybe ditching them isn't simple!
They are part of Java, but I agree they are ugly compared to Flat l&f and the system l&f so I've made jAlbum filter out Metal, Motif and Nimbus for the upcoming next beta. You can still select the ugly ones, but then you need to hold down the ALT key while accessing the JComboBox.

I've now updated all installer archives to b4:
Installers:
Windows: http://jalbum.net/download/jAlbum-install.exe
Mac: http://jalbum.net/download/jAlbum.dmg
Any system: http://jalbum.net/download/jAlbum.zip
Changes:
- Bundled pixymeta library to support embedding xmp metadata within GIF, PNG, and TIFF images too (JPEG images still managed by Commons Imaging for safety)
- New Flat Look&Feel actually delivering 5 new stylish looks to jAlbum (Old ugly look&feels now only available if you hold down ALT key while selecting looks). See system/themes in case you like to extend jAlbum with your own custom look&feels
- Updates to plugins/extensions to match the new look&feels
- jAlbum's new "Organize by Calendar" now has an example button too
- Various bug fixes

If custom themes are to be encouraged, is it possible for them to be placed within the user’s configuration directory?

Why not? I've now adjusted http://jalbum.net/download/beta/jalbum-core.jar so it also looks under <config>/themes

Downloaded the attached, put it in a themes folder, started jAlbum and picked it from the L&F menu. Restarted jAlbum and the new theme is active
Also, tried setting a region with a png and it too is working well.

Just looking at links mentioned in this post. Most, if not all use http instead of https, such as the example calendar - http://jalbum.net/Download/Seasons.ics. Is there likely to be a move to https?

From Menu>File>Duplicate Project, the popup window asks for the 'Album name' instead of the 'Project name'.

The Menu>View>Refresh is still not showing the keyboard shortcut of F5

Whilst editing the wiki I was reminded of the 'Import from database' menu choice. It currently states 'jpeg' images only. Is this something that can now be updated to include PNG, GIF and TIFF files?
