Process folders without images, but but files are present

My albums may contain folder with data files (not images) that are part of the publication. It would be helpful if such a folder is normally processed displaying either a fixed icon, or my own, to visually differentiate between the file types. That way the look-and-feel of that directory is the same as the rest of the album.

Folders containing no displayable images should be presented with a folder icon in the final album. If that isn't ok, then please tell what you prefer.

In explore mode folders should have an item in their context menu which opens a file chooser and allows selecting an image or a frame from a movie. Currently folders share the same context menu with images, which is an annoyance, as many of the items displayed do not apply to folders.

- Open the folder.
- Add the image you want to use to represent it.
- Click the "exclude" icon.
- Click the "heart" icon.
I think adding another, different mechanism for accomplishing the same thing would be confusing.

- Add the image you want to use to represent it.
- Click the "heart" icon (if the thumbnail isn't already showing it).
- Click the "exclude" icon.
As the subject reads:
- Process folders without images, but files are present
the above does not apply: http://www.mistelberger.net/testjAlbum/Empty

A quick demo (I won't leave this up for long): (demo album removed)
The Empty folder has only a PDF. There is no image. But the image that I added, excluded, then chose as the folder thumbnail is, in fact, showing on the index page.
Edit: It gets used as the "hero" image for the folder in Tiger, as well.

I tried that several times. Whenever I excluded the image it became deselected and the folder thumb was gone also.
But for some unknown reason it stays selected now. That is what I want. But the tries before were frustrating.

You need to exclude, then select as folder thumbnail, not the other way around (I could swear it used to work either way....).

I started again with an empty directory.
- When adding an image Use as folder thumbnail is checked automatically
- Unchecking Use as folder thumbnail does not work
- Excluding the image also unchecks Use as folder thumbnail
- When excluded Use as folder thumbnail can be checked and unchecked
And according to your experience it changes over time. This is idio ticsyncratic.

You would first need to uncheck 'Use thumbnail for folder icon' in Settings/Advanced/General as with that set and only one image it has to select that as the thumbnail.

Then save as default, so new projects do not have it selected as a default.

Yes, I've got that checked in my defaults, but only because when you're doing a lot of testing, it's handy, since in the normal case, it will always provide for a folder thumbnail. For real-world use, however, it's rare that you want the first image in a folder chosen for the folder thumbnail.
But it does explain the behavior in this case. The folder has no images, so there's no chosen folder thumbnail. You add an image, so jAlbum chooses it as the folder thumbnail. But when you exclude it, it says, "Oh, this image has been excluded - I will need to de-select it as the folder thumbnail, and choose a different one." But, of course, there is no other image available. Stuck.
This could be fixed, I suppose, but it's such a rare case, and is so easily worked around, it doesn't seem worth the effort.
But working from the other direction, there's no problem. You add an image, then exclude it. Now you choose it as the folder thumbnail. jAlbum says, "Well, whatever the folder thumbnail used to be, now it's going to be this one."
But the bottom line doesn't change vis-à-vis the feature request. jAlbum already provides a perfectly workable way to provide a folder thumbnail for a folder with only non-image files in it. There's no need for a secondary method.

The folder itself is present, but the files are not.
I'd like to have the files represented by an icon (preferably one of choice so I can use different icons for different filetypes, but I can live with a fixed one). In the end the presentation of this folder would be the same layout as image directories, but showing file icons 9and names). On processing, compilation would create this directory, and show the files as well.
FYI: For the moment the directory is defined, set to be processed even when emty,. On compilation, the index.html file is created, but I have to add the files manually into the destination directory, next edit the index file to add (in list format) the files; this needs to be repeated if, for some reason, the album is to be recreated.
What I would like is the ability to add ANY file and have it processed as if they were images....

I've described, above, how to choose an image to represent a folder that contains only "other" files, like PDF's.
If you want to have an individual file represented by something other than the default icon, jAlbum already provides a way to do that, as well. Let's say you have a file called mydog.pdf. Normally, the thumbnail for that file would show the generic PDF icon:
If you want to use some other image for all PDF files, you could provide your own pdf.png, and plant it in the skin's res directory. Just remember that following a skin update, you'd have to copy your chosen file again.
If you want to use some other image for just one specific PDF, like mydog.pdf, you need to decide what image you want to use, like something.jpg, and rename it mydog.thm. Then add mydog.pdf and mydog.thm to the album project at the same time. jAlbum will use that image to represent mydog.pdf.

That might be skin-specific. If a skin can't display non-image files, it might just ignore them, for good reason. What skin are you using?
Edit: Equally important, what are the file extensions on the files in your folder? jAlbum recognizes only a defined set of file types - you can't add just anything.
