These are photos of hunting ginseng in Hancock County, Tennessee in 2007. The hunter is Bill Cameron of Grainger County.When you think of activities that mountaineers traditional performed, ginseng hunting is toward the top of the list. It is an experience that separates old-time mountain people from those who merely live in the mountains. From the days of Daniel Boone until now, it is a pursuit that draws harvesters into the ridges and backwoods. The motive has always been profit and the degree of difficulty has always been high. This album chronicles the Tellico Project and its impact on the land and the people of Loudon,Monroe, and Blount Counties, Tennessee. November 29, 2009 marks the thirty year anniversary of the closing of the Tellico Dam and the end of the Little Tennessee River and it's river valley. The archival photographs were taken between fall, 1975 and fall, 1979. Most were taken in 1976.
