Background music in albums

In addition to images and videos, jAlbum also allows you to add background music to your web album. Background music is a skin specific feature, meaning that you will have to find a skin that support for this. In this tutorial we will go through some popular jAlbum skins (included in the jAlbum license) that plays background music.

1. Turtle

In Turtle you can add background music in two different ways. If you want to have the same music playing in the whole album you should follow the instructions under Alternative 1. If you want to have different music playing in different sub folders you should instead follow the instructions under Alternative 2.

Alternative 1

AddMusicFile.png

Go to Settings -> Turtle -> Audio and Video and click the green plus sign to add your music files.

MusicAdded.png

When the music file is added you can take a look at the four checkboxes below. Auto-start means that the music will automatically start playing when the album is opened in a browser. Controlled by slideshow means that the music will start and stop when the slideshow starts and stops. Retain play position means that the play position is retained when you navigate to a new page. And Loop means that the playlist (one or more music tracks) is looped.

When you are happy with the settings you can click OK and then Make the album and preview it.

Alternative 2

JalbumSubFolder.png

Double click the sub folder to open it. Then open your filesystem and browse to music file you want to use and drag and drop it onto jalbum. You can also click on the add-button and browse to it. When the music file is added in the sub folder you can go to the other sub folders and add your music files in the same way.

UseAudio.png

Go to Settings -> Turtle -> Audio and video and tick the checkbox Use audio files in the album as background music. Now you just have to Make the album and preview it.

MrBurn5.png

2. Mr.Burn5

Mr.Burns5 will start the background music when you click the play button to start the slideshow. It's not possible to auto-start the slideshow and the music. To auto-start the slideshow is only possible in albums without background music.

When Mr.Burn5 is selected as skin you can go to Settings -> Mr.Burn5. In the bottom of this settings page you can add a music track. Click on Pick song and browse to the music track you want to use and click Open.

SongPicked.png

When you have picked the song it will look like this. Now you just have to press OK and then Make Album and preview it.

Note that if you are using jAlbum 12 or later you might need to preview the album in an external browser to see the result since the integrated browser in jAlbum doesn't support flash.

Lumen.png

3. Lumen

Lumen can also play background music but the support is limited. It's not recommended to have background music in Lumen albums with sub folders. But for albums without sub folders it should work fine.

Note that if you are using jAlbum 12 or later you might need to preview the album in an external browser to see the result since the integrated browser in jAlbum doesn't support flash.

PickSongLumen.png

When Lumen is selected as skin you can go to Settings -> Lumen -> Behaviour. In the bottom of this settings page you can add the music track. Click on Pick song and browse to the music track you want to use and click Open.

SongPickedLumen1.png

When you have picked the song it will look like this. There is one more option regarding the background music, Number of seconds of music to prebuffer before playback starts. The default setting is 5 seconds and I think that is pretty good because you don't want it take longer than that for the music to start playing anyway. And if the internet connection is normal the music will always start playing right away.

Now you just have to press OK and then Make Album and preview it.

Matrix.png

4. Matrix

In Matrix, it's possible to either have the same music play in all sub folders or to have different music in all sub folders. The file format needs to be mp3.

Use the same music in all sub folders

MusicSettingsMatrix.png

There are a few settings regarding the background music. Control bar position sets the location of the music control bar, select Autostart if you want the music to begin playing automatically upon page loading. This option is unfortunately not effective on mobile devices. And Loop through play list will make the album loop through the play list continuously until the visitor leaves the page.

When you are happy with the playlist just press OK and then Make album and preview the album.

Use different music in different sub folders

FolderEditMode.png

To add a specific music track for a sub folder you need to open that sub folder in Edit mode. Mark the folder and press Edit. In edit mode you need to expand the Matrix section to the right and then click on the button Click for Image or Folder Settings and then open the Music tab.

SpecialFolderSettings.png

To enable the specific music settings for this folder you need tick the checkbox "Override for this folder". The other settings here are the same as the global music settings. You can navigate between the subfolders by using the arrows at the bottom of the page. look at the top of the window to see what folder you are in.

You can do the same for all subfolders you want to add other music too. The folder that you don't add other music to will play the music added in the global music settings.

Note that if you are using jAlbum 12 or later you might need to preview the album in an external browser to see the result since the integrated browser in jAlbum doesn't support flash.
