Display a picture while viewing the expanded rendering....

Am using the Tiger skin to show a collection of 3d carving models for use by people who have CNC carving machines and software to take a model from the site, import it into his/her machine, and then carve the model into wood to be finished, sold, displayed or whatever.

I want to be able to have some modelers send in a picture so that others can see a real cutting of the model as opposed to a rendering of what the carved model should look like.

my structure has several folder categories, animals, biker, cities, clocks, and many more. once the folder has been opened, thumbnails of all the items are in that category are displayed. When the viewer decides to take a closer look, clicking on the model thumbnail will open an enlarged view of the model. all pretty normal up to here, but here is where Id like to add a link (or something), so that the viewer would then be able to see pictures of some actual carvings of that model. it would be performing as if it were a subfolder under the expanded rendered view where the carvers pictures are stored.

tried many things, all so far are not workable....
Thanks, Henri Monnier

I think I would just create a separate album project for each of the "actual carvings," and put a link to it in the caption for the model.
<a href="http://example.com/carvings123/" target="_blank">Click here to see the carvings created from this model</a>
I can't think of any way to automate the process - what you're trying to do just doesn't fit into the jAlbum model.

jG....
I realiize it is way outside the 'intent' of the skin. I do think your suggestion is a workable one, but I'm not sure if backarrowing will bring the user back to the album itself. A test will easily confirm that.I will certainly try that... thanks, Henri

There are two ways you can approach this.

In my example, the "actual carvings" album opens in a new browser tab - that's what the target="blank" is for. In that case, you wouldn't want any backarrow on the "actual carvings" album. When the visitor closes the "actual carvings" album, he'd still be looking at the page from which he clicked the link.

The other option is to have the "actual carvings" album open in the same browser tab - just leave out the target="_blank attribute. But then you'd have to enter a "home" URL in the "actual carvings" album that points back to the page that showed the model. That will be a lot more difficult to control.

Well your solution works pefectly for a single image, which is fine for the initial start, i'll more than likely go to your second option later, after this gets distributed. Thanks for the suggestion.

here is a puzzle i just do not see.... what am i missing??? i am really stumped....

=====

Well i'm stumped.....

i created a hidden folder called "carvings", with a subfolder with the index number of the carved image. also in the hidden folder i placed a small jpeg icon of a camera. which i wanted to use in place of all the text.

The top line in the comments field works fine, #1, when the album is compiled and viewed the carved image comes up and shows perfectly. closing the window takes me back to the album, as expected. PERFECT.....

in the second comment field, #2, it seems that whatever I do, shows up as a broken link, and as a result the compile and view also fail.

#1 - <a href="../../carvings/320/320.jpg" target="_blank"> Click here to see a carving created from this model</a>

#2 - <a href="../../carvings/320/320.jpg" target="_blank"> <img src="../../carvings/camera.jpg"> </a>

obviously i'm missing something, but dammed if i see it....

Correct

If the camera.jpg image is showing as a broken link, that simply means that you have the relative path wrong, or the file isn't in "carvings" at all. Without actually seeing your album, I can't tell why.

Both the containing folder with the image and the camera image are at the same level, and the image is there. ive checke the spellings so much that the ink is wearing off. I'm gonna put together a small stand alone setup to work this on a smaller basis. I will let you know where i screwed up.... I just do not see it, perhaps its time for a break..... thanks for your info, youve been a big help on this issue and one earlier.... have a good day..... henri

#2 - <a href="../../carvings/320/320.jpg" target="_blank"> <img src="../../carvings/camera.jpg"> </a>

#1 works fine
#2 fails

What I think..... I do not think the skin allows the embedded img src statement, I reduced #2 to just "<img src="../../carvings/camera.jpg>", and it does not display the image, yet when i type in the url, it comes right up and shows the camera image.

Henri

I'll be glad to send you whatever you want if you look at it. I am fully stumped.

Yes, you're right. Tiger "helpfully" removes the HTML content of the comment. There doesn't appear to be any way to persuade Tiger not to do that. Try another skin, like Pluto, just to confirm it.

If you use the skin's built-in "camera" icon everything gets much simpler:
<a href="../../carvings/320/320.jpg" class="smallbtn icon-camera" target="_blank">&nbsp;</a>

Laza, GREAT..... Thank you very much!!!!

1 last question (bet they always say that). is there a way to display a text credit to the person on the opened image? tried comment, etc., with no luck. Suspect the target="_blank" prevents that. On the opened image I'd like to have something like "Carved by: Tony Duderewicz"

The target="_blank" tells the brower to open the image in a new browser tab, instead of the same browser tab. Without that, clicking the link would take the visitor away from the album entirely.

But you're just opening a JPG in a browser tab. There's no web page there, so there's no formatting, no captions, no background color, etc. If you want a caption, you'll need to create an actual web page on which to put the JPG. It doesn't have to be complicated, like an actual jAlbum album, but it does have to be a real web page.

That is what I was afraid of. I think I'm better of if I create a bottom banner with the info in it and put the two pieces together with photoshop. on the fence, which do you like?

That would probably be easier. Once you start creating your own web pages for each of the "actual carvings," it gets much more complicated, and very quickly.
