Alphabetic arrangement

I have one particular directory with many sub-directories in which only one of the sub-directory names is not capitalized. When I view that main directory the non-capitalized sub-directory is at the bottom of the list rather than in alphabetic sequence, although when viewed with Filezilla it is in alphabetic order. There are too many references to the non-capitalized name elsewhere to consider renaming it. Is there a way to get jAlbum to show it in alphabetic order?

Odd. Usually, the basic jAlbum "order by name" is not case-sensitive.

But rather than try to beat the problem to death, why not just click and drag that one lower-case folder to where you want it?

And remember that, if your "many sub-directories" means that you have a lot of scrolling to do when you want to drag from the bottom of the list to nearer the top, you can "zoom out" in the "Explore View" so that the target position is on-screen when you click on the folder to be dragged.

To move a directory or file around in a more safe way than drag and drop, select the file/folder and select CTRL/CMD+X (cut), then move the mouse to where you want it placed and select CTRL/CMD+V (paste)

jAlbum's sorting can be puzzling. Order by Name is the option of least embarrassment:

karl@erlangen:~> /bin/ls -1 /home/Albums/Tiger/
2008-04-13
2016-07-08
2017-05-19
2017-07-10

'bears1 - Copy.jpg'
frenchpress.pdf
frenchpress.thm
Hibiscus-4746-C-517e-Env.jpg
'Vecht Sahara 140328 1005.jpg'
karl@erlangen:~>
Compare the above alphabetical sorting of the operating system to Order by Name of jAlbum: http://www.mistelberger.net/Tiger/

I made it a habit starting the name of the folders with the date:

karl@erlangen:/home/Albums/Bilder/2018> ls -1d 2018-07-23*
2018-07-23
2018-07-23-Bettina
2018-07-23-Mike
karl@erlangen:/home/Albums/Bilder/2018>

Camera originals of my DMC TZ71 are p1270102.jpg, p1270103.jpg, ... jAlbum's Order by Name sorts them chronologically.

Once every now and then others contribute to the album. In March I added their images:

karl@erlangen:/home/Albums/Bilder/2018> ls -dr 2018-03-???*
2018-03-14-3V 2018-03-10-Meribel
karl@erlangen:/home/Albums/Bilder/2018>

This worked well with Order folders by > Folders first, Name and Reverse.

In July I added folders Umhausen-Bettina and Umhausen-Mike. These appeared on the top of the page. Later I tried to sort them manually. Upon frequently updating the page (once or twice a week) order changed unpredictably, which drove me nuts.

In the end I renamed the folders as follows:

karl@erlangen:/home/Albums/Bilder/2018> ls -dr 2018-07-???*
2018-07-23-Mike 2018-07-23-Bettina
karl@erlangen:/home/Albums/Bilder/2018>

Now order of the pages is again what I want to have. Updates don't change it anymore.

With reverse alphabetical ordering any alphabetic character naturally comes after numbers, but it should naturally be consistent. Let me know if you have any reproduceable case where the order changes randomly.

Confirmed. Thanks for putting this project together! I've now fixed the buggy behavior in folder ordering. Replace your lib/jalbum-core.jar with this one . (Currently I cannot offer this as a core update due to a version numbering mistake in 17.1)

Note that all the project's folders, when unzipped, have exactly the same date. This will make jAlbum ignore if you toggle "Reverse folder ordering". This is not a bug but a side effect of having the exact same dates on the folders.

Downloaded http://jalbum.net/download/beta/jalbum-core.jar and got v17.1.1. Project Order now gets ordered by name correctly.

Hey, how come Karl got the magic, self-healing core? David, you should just use that one all the time.

Sorry that I've been away for a few days and had not followed the discussion. I obviously have not explained the situation very well.

I thought I had placed the original question in the "Uploading albums" forum, since the problem is unique to that action. When I go to Upload/Manage and navigate to the main directory that has 100 or so sub-directories, the list of sub-directories is in alphabetic order except for the un-capitalized name, which is at the bottom. I cannot simply grab and move (nor cut and paste) the directory to the proper slot because the system only allows me to place it within another directory, but not between directories. The "sort by name" function obviously doesn't apply to this situation where I am uploading and viewing existing albums.

Perhaps the question should be moved to the "Uploading albums" forum.
