jAlbum 14.2 beta for testing
Posted: 26-Oct-2017 17:24
jAlbum 14.2 is soon to be released now. Here are the changes and fixes:

  • Removed ability to include hi-res images (doesn't seem to be used)
  • Hard links: Drastically (20 times) reduces size of album folders by using hard links for original images and resource files (Toggle under Preferences->Album)
  • Supports 360° images (Tiger skin + new property panel under Edit)
  • Now generates lifeboat file to album folder (toggle under Preferences->Album)
  • Smoother looking splash screen
  • Allows adding web locations requiring basic http authentication too
  • Developers: JDraggableList now supports static lists too
  • Developers: New "projectionType" variable available (in json format too) to identify 360° images
  • The whole code base, including all extensions, refactored to use use Java 8 features and more performant constructs. The result should be slight performance enhancements, including somewhat lower startup time
  • Old code solutions factored out
  • Windows version bundled with Java 9, fixing user interface scaling issue for hidpi screens
  • Mac version bundled with updated Java 8u152
  • Updated Tiger and Turtle skins
  • Fix: Videos larger than screen size couldn't be edited (Windows only)
  • Fix: Web root verification failed for servers that redirects between protocols
  • Fix to various smaller errors

Late addition:
  • New folder property panel allowing easy selection of representing folder thumbnail and separate theme image + crop focus setting

Here are installers for Windows , Mac and zip for you to try. Bug reports appreciated!

Attachment Tiger.jaskin (4,4 MB)
Here's Tiger 1.4.2 that works with jAlbum 14.2. I don't want to release it until 14.2 comes out officially.

New:
  • 360 player has auto-pano, zoom and fullscreen functions
  • Option to disable the 360 player even if image holds the "projectionType=equiRectangular" attribute

Changed:

Note:
  • 360 player's full screen mode is buggy on Chrome/Win

I'm not getting an error message, but if I try to view a Tiger/Photo Sphere album using the integrated browser, I get a Loading... message when I try to view the image, but it never loads. The other Tiger material is there - a working controlbar, link to popup metadata - but no image. Same result, Win10 and macOS.

Sometimes, but not always, there's a console message: THREE.CanvasRenderer. But it's not an error message (no ! in a triangle).

No problem with regular JPG's, of course, and a local preview in Firefox is OK, too.

One little oddity, that I don't think happened in older versions....

If I'm using the integrated browser, but then turn that preference off, I'm not immediately kicked back to the Explore view. I'm still in the Preview view, and if I open another project, the results are a bit unpredictable - maybe the preview of the previous album, maybe a preview of the newly-selected project, maybe a blank window. There's also sometimes a console error message, Browser error file not found. In short, it's kind of no-man's-land.

Close and relaunch cleans everything up again, of course.

The new version of Tiger isn't using Google VRview. It's using the Jérémy Heleine Photo Sphere Viewer.

Yes, the built in web browser doesn't support WebGL, so it can't be used to preview spheres...

The older tiger verison (1.4.1) has the Google VR viewer, which says "WebGL not supported", while the new Tiger version (1.4.2) has the viewer by Jérémy Heleine, which currently says nothing if there is no WebGL support. We'll adjust that...

With Tiger skin getting used more and more, as well as other skins that use JSON files, maybe an option to allow users to open such albums in Firefox, if installed, instead of the default browser, would be useful?

Is now the time to update the skins pages/, drop 'Uses Flash' and add '360 Photo Sphere'?

Whilst I'm thinking about it, so it is documented, Tiger only opens correctly in Firefox if you load the root index.html page. Trying to start from any subfolder fails like any other browser. I don't think I've seen this mentioned before, apologies if it has been.

Long past time to dump the ability to search for Flash skins! Flash skins should still be identified as such, however, so that the skin pages can warn users about them. So, leave the skin attribute there, but remove it from the search list (though that might take some fiddling).

I'd say it's time to remove most of the Flash skins from the repository entirely, but as long as online jAlbum is offering five of them, that's a tough thing to do. (I'd leave SimpleViewer alone, since it's the best of the bunch, and maybe the older versions of BananAlbum, which still seems to have quite a few loyal users.)
