An example. Both scaled to 1600x750, original is 3872x2592. JPEG Quality 85%, Sharpening 50, no HW acceleration. Virtually indistinguishable, IMO.

The sharpening is the wild card - I'll try it without that and post back.

OK, here are a couple of examples with sharpening turned off.

Same original, scaled to 1200x750, Quality 75, Sharpening 0, no HW acceleration.

Slight difference, but it still requires very sharp vision to spot it.

It looks like the new method is slightly better. Medium with 25% sharpening.
Attached are images old method, new method and difference (converted to black and white, layers set to difference and then merged down and inverted)

Clever with that difference image, then one knows what to look for.

I get the same error pop-up after I installed the beta version on my Windows 10 laptop and I did solve it in the same way.

Same story here. After installing on top of 14, same pop-up. Tried from command-line, and the error was:
C:\Program Files\jAlbum>StartJAlbum-debug.cmd
Error: missing `server' JVM at `C:\Program Files\jAlbum\jre64\bin\server\jvm.dll'.
Please install or use the JRE or JDK that contains these missing components.
Press any key to continue . . .

C:\Program Files\jAlbum>

Uninstall-reinstall helped. Checked that after update, jre64 was about 205 MB, while after uninstall-reinstall it is 215 MB. So looks like update does not install jre64 files properly.

This last Windows beta has been bundled with Java 9.0.1 instead of 9.0.0. It seems like v9.0.1 has grown a bunch of MB. One update is for instance a newer version of the embedded web browser. That single update made it worthwhile the extra MB.

That was not what I meant with the disk usage difference. Steps I took:
  • Installed http://jalbum.net/download/jAlbum-install.exe (checksum SHA256: 7956B568AD0215FFC6D78CBE442F5D94116BA6E8F257925309E779C24BC7510B) on top of previous jAlbum 14
  • Size of jre64 is 205 MB. According to jre64/release, this is 9.0.1. Application does not start but gives the JRE dialog mentioned before.
  • Uninstall jAlbum.
  • Re-install with the same jAlbum-install.exe as before.
  • jre64 size is now 215 MB, version again 9.0.1. Application starts.
So the point was that updating over previous jAlbum does not seem to properly install the JRE.

I have backup of the broken and working JRE. If needed, I can inspect further which files actually differ within the jre64 directory.

I have still two bugs: if I re-encode movies (see attachment Region capture 5.png ) I get a lot of errors with ffmpeg (see attachment Region capture 3.png ) and if I don't re-encode I get an error with making a slides folder that for some reason changes into a file, so the content can't be put there (see attachtment Region capture 4.png and Region capture 2.png )

The last error has maybe something to do with the color profile: HD(1-1-1). I attach the movie: IMG_2320a.mp4

Thanks. I'd appreciate knowing what files are affected and if you can reproduce that problem consistently.

Sorry, can't reproduce. Please see if you can reproduce the problem by putting that .mp4 video in a freshly created project.

This bug is now 3 times reproduced and you still don't believe it?
Go away from your MAC and try a Windows 10 PC!

I've never seen this problem on either Win10 or macOS. I suspect that those who are seeing it have some deeply-rooted permission problems in their Windows setup.

I can't reproduce those problems on Win 10 either, but I found another bug that could cause data loss for your original video if you use hard links and "Do not re-encode", then make the album and now switch on video encoding again and make the album. b13, available as a core file here , fixes that.

I recommend Agent Ransack. This can compare two folders and all their subfolders. It will take a few seconds to show the differences.

Looks like jre64/server/jvm.dll is missing when updating over older version. I was able to reproduce the issue.

  • 1) Uninstalled jAlbum. Removed c:\Program Files\jAlbum
  • 2) Installed jAlbum from https://jalbum.net/fi/downloadmirror/os/64-bit%20Windows - 14.1.10. Installer checksum SHA256: 558D933A5EDCFAAFBAC4BD02E5EDD7CB0FD198434575B9DA546AE5E1865488D4
  • 3) Opened jAlbum to check it opens ok. Close jAlbum.
  • 4) Install http://jalbum.net/download/jAlbum-install.exe - Installer checksum SHA256: 7956B568AD0215FFC6D78CBE442F5D94116BA6E8F257925309E779C24BC7510B
  • 5) jAlbum does not open. Copy backup of jre64 for later comparison.
  • 6) Uninstall jAlbum.
  • 7) Install jAlbum with same installer as in 4).
  • 8) jAlbum starts
  • 9) Comparing backup jre64 with working one shows jre64/server/jvm.dll was missing at 5) compared to successful installation. Other files are binary same.
