I've now updated the jAlbum engine for Online jAlbum, and also updated the Turtle skin. I hope we're not getting any nasty side effects because of this.

Any other skin that need to be updated?

Um, yeah! The Matrix version is a dinosaur, and the styles have changed a lot, as well. The headless-settings.jap that's in the .jaskin should be good enough to set up the new version in online jAlbum.

I suspect that SImpleViewer needs to be updated, as well.

But a lot of the skins in online jAlbum probably need to be removed, and replaced with more current offerings. It's quite a lineup:

  • Lumen - Flash, unsupported
  • Mr.Burns - Flash, unsupported
  • Compact - unsupported
  • Expo - unsupported
  • Simplicity - unsupported
  • EyeSocket - not even in the skin repository any longer, AFAIK
  • Galleria - unsupported (though still popular)
  • PhotoBox - unsupported
  • PhotoStack - Flash, unsupported
  • Photojack - unsupported
  • PostcardViewer - Flash, unsupported
  • Showcase - unsupported

If the intent of online jAlbum is to lure new users to the application, using skins that are obsolete and/or unsupported is probably not the best strategy.

Not sure what you do about existing albums, however.

Yeah, the problem is if we remove a skin or style and a user wants to add a photo to his album that is using a now removed skin/style, he will have a bit of surprise. Currently I guess it will fail with an error message, but we can of course fix that so it reverts to the default style or skin... But the user might be disappointed anyway...

There's another potential problem (as if you don't already have enough). The Matrix styles aren't controlled by CSS files in the styles subdirectory. The init.bsh actually reads in the appropriate .properties file and extracts the color codes it needs. Not sure how you handle things in online jAlbum, so that may not be an issue, but....

I think you know how I feel about online jAlbum, in general. I would have quietly deprecated it a few years ago, not allowing the creation of any new albums, and gradually easing users onto the desktop application, perhaps with a service to "bundle" existing albums into an easily-importable form. The problems with it aren't going to get any better with the passage of time.

A minor quibble. Matrix, by default, shows the jAlbum version number on a credits line. It's showing 13rc3. Probably not the best thing to display.

That was the best version I had yesterday, but I have now received a brand new jar-file from David, is it should say 13.2.1 if you build the album again.

There were also a problem with the sorting of the images that we've fixed now.

Please refresh my memory, how can I use online jAlbum?
I guess you don't mean the jAlbum IOS app, how can I use online jAlbum on my iPad?
I guess it is a method to compose an album in the browser, but I can't find a link in the jAlbum.net menu.

I found it, the link is only available on your personal jAlbum home page.

Now I rember also that you do not allow that skins not made by jAlbum staff are used in that tool, so you offer there now only obsolete non responsive skins!

There, and in the footer of every other page.

There is a mix of both internally and externally made skins there.

"Only" is a strong word, but yes, most of them are quite old...
