Saving Defaults and Project Templates
Posted: 4 Feb 14, 16:41
In jAlbum, you can get all the settings the way you want them, then choose File, Save as Default. This means that every new project you start will begin with those saved settings, including the choice of skin, and the settings within that skin.

You can also save default settings by skin. For example, choose the Tiger skin, get all the settings the way you usually want them, then choose File, Save as Skin Default. This means that any time you select the Tiger skin for a new project, it will use these default settings. You can then save a group of settings for Comet, a set for Mirage, and so on.

But now let's say you want to use one group of settings for all of your family albums, but another group for all of your business albums, both using the same skin, like Tiger. There is a way to handle this, but it requires a few extra steps.

First, decide where you want to save your project templates. Create a folder somewhere like C:\Documents\Album Templates (probably best to keep it outside of My Albums, to avoid confusion).

Now get a project set up the way you want it for the family albums - choose Tiger and adjust all the jAlbum and skin settings. Saving the album project creates a file called jalbum-settings.jap in the project directory. These settings apply only to this particular project. So far, so good. But now choose File, Save Album Project As..., navigate to Album Templates, and save the file as family.jap.

Now get a project set up the way you want it for business albums - choose Tiger and adjust all the jAlbum and skin settings. Again, saving the album project will create jalbum-settings.jap for just this project. But now choose File, Save Album Project As..., navigate to Album Templates, and save the file as business.jap.

You now have two templates that you can import for any other project. Say you're starting a new family album. Add your images, choose the Tiger skin, choose File, Import, Settings from Album Project..., navigate to the Album Templates folder, and choose family.jap. That will bring in all the settings from that template. It won't change the images, the comments, the image directory, or the output directory - it will copy only the other jAlbum and skin settings from the template to the current project.

You can, of course, set up as many templates as you like - two Tiger variants, four Comet setups, and a Mirage template. Just give each one a different project file name, and make it something obvious and easy to remember.

When one of your favorite skins gets updated, you'll often need to update your templates for that skin. Let's say your family.jap template uses Tiger, and there's a new version of Tiger. Launch jAlbum, choose File, Open Album Project..., navigate to Album Templates, and open family.jap. Now make sure that any new Tiger settings are the way you want them. Choose File, Save Album Project, and you're done. Your template is now updated to work with the newest release of Tiger.

It's always possible to import the settings from any existing album project and apply them to the current project, even if you haven't set defaults or saved album templates. Start your new album project, add your images, and choose the skin. Now choose File, Import, Settings from Album Project..., and navigate to the project directory for some existing project whose settings you want to copy. Select the jalbum-settings.jap file, and those settings will be applied to your current project.

Last but not least, let's say you want to bypass or delete the defaults you've set up.

To get rid of the settings you've chosen as the "any new project" defaults, open your configuration directory - Tools, Open directories, Config directory - and delete the defaults.jap file. Now any new project you create will use the jAlbum defaults.

To get rid of a skin-specific default, open your configuration directory and delete the skin defaults file, like Tiger-defaults.jap.

To choose a skin but temporarily have it load with its own default settings instead of the settings you've chosen for it, hold down the ALT key while selecting the skin.
