Attachment Missing Icons.jpg (50.5 KB)
Under Win7, running the 64-bit version of Jalbum w/the 64-bit Java, the file chooser is missing several icons. In the attached image, the "Up one level," "Create new folder," and "Details" icons are missing. If you hover over their locations, their outlines appear, but no images in the icon. Note that the "List" icon is showing just an outline, as well.

I'm seeing this in the Jalbum application (8.5.2) and in the Camelot alpha.

Looks like this is a Java bug and has been fixed in Java 6 Update 18 b03.
(Search for 'JFileChooser'.)

Your link doesn't work, but I'll take your word for it - the error certainly had the feel of something buried in Java itself. I'll wait for the next update (tricky on a Win7 machine, since you have to update both the 32-bit and 64-bit versions, and the "auto-detect" routine at java.com doesn't take care of it).

Sorry about the link.
Try this for the list of fixes in Java 6u18 b03 and this for the bug report itself.

Yup, that's precisely the bug. Glad I wasn't just imagining things!

What is the secret to getting that version (18-b03). On my win7 64bit machine I have build 1.6.0_16-b01 and Sun Java says I have the latest version.

The 32 and 64-bit offline installers for Java 6 Update 18 b04 Runtime Environment can be found here.
Please bear in mind that these releases are still 'Early Access' (essentialy beta) versions.

I have that version too, and am running Vista 32 bit, no prolems with the file chooser missing icons. So my guess is it is 64 bit os related.

regards,
Tom

I'll wait for the official release, but I've got 1.6.0_17-b04, which appears to be the latest non-beta version. When I hit java.com on my Win7 machine, it did an automatic update, but only of the 32-bit version. To get the update on the 64-bit version, I had to hit the "see all Java downloads" link, then the "Information about the 64-bit Java plug-in" link, and lastly the "manual download" link.

This page is woefully out of date (it doesn't even mention Win7, or even IE8), but apparently IE defaults to the 32-bit version (there's nothing to be gained by using 64-bit in a browser, I guess), so that's all the java.com version checker sees. I believe FF also defaults to the 32-bit. So, to get an update for your 64-bit version, you have to do the updating manually.
