3D stereoviews side-by-side in original format before Holmes.

I just posted a few of my stereoviews. These were taken with 100 year old glass plate cameras and are in the original side-by-side format just like they were 150 years ago before Holmes. They are easy to "Freeview" without a stereo viewer and were very popular in Europe even after Holmes stereoscopes became popular in the U.S. There were many picture post cards printed this way so you could just look at them and see the 3D without needing a viewer.

If you have never viewed stereo before, just gaze through the pictures and let your eyes relax. A third image will appear between the two that is in 3D. This image will pop in and become very clear. Focus your eyes on the center picture and don't look back at the sides or try to focus on the screen, but look through it. Enjoy !

They are in a subdirectory under the main galpics (gallery pictures) so click on that, then the thumbnail at the top that says stereo.

I see in these posts, that they are viewed 100's and even 1,000's of times without even one comment. I don't understand that. Please let me know what you think either say you don't give a crap, or you think it's cool or something !

I can't find any 3D-pictures. Are they hidden somewhere?

The album can be seen at http://jalbum.net/browse/user/album/335970/. It is not in the home page but in the header "more album from Cliff Manley"

The 3D side-by-sides are more easily accessed here: http://flyboy4081.jalbum.net/galpics/stereo/

The 3D effect is initially tough to produce. In effect, you're letting your eyes cross so that the two images are superimposed, creating a third image between the other two.

Ah, very nice! :-)

They could have been a bit bigger though. But nice anyway!

The images are for side-by-side viewing, not cross-eyed viewing. so they need to be of a size that is about the width of your eyes from center to center of the two pictures. This is about 2 1/2 inches. These side-by-side views are typical of the original cards used in Victorian viewers.

Cross-eyed pictures can be larger however. The oly difference being which pictue is on the right and left. If you look at it the wrong way the depth perception will be incorrect and the background will look like it is in front of the foreground.

I have just added a few iamges for cross-eyed viewing, hope you like them. Please keep in mind these were all taken with 100 year old glass plate cameras. And walking around that dusty camp, I got a few dust spots on the plates.

Great stuff! Though programming after a few minutes of cross-eyed viewing is a challenge... :-)

The true side-by-side stereoviews are always small. You look through them focusing at infinity and the pictures are spaced the width of your eyes. The nice thing about cross-eyed viewing is they can be any size. And you can view them from any distance. So if you sit back at 5 feet or so from the screen, you don't need to cross you eyes very much to get the result, and is very comfortable to view. You can even view a pair of 8x10 stereo photos on the wall like this. By using medium and large format cameras, you can get extreme detail. You wouldn't want to sit right up close to view the cross-eyed pictures or your eyes would indeed get tired. I hope you all get to see some of these in real time, rather than on a monitor. As you know the detail is lost in the compressed web photos. When you see these true 3D photographs in real life they literally pull you right through the stereo window as if you were walking around the actual place, very much like the modern virtual reality, but in antique form.

With all the hype of the technology used in "Toy Story 3D, it is really nothing new. What I have shown you, is how it was done and what it looked like from literally the beginning of photography itself.

What really amazes me is that over 1100 views of this post there is not one comment left about the photos. Tell me what you think. Can you see the 3D, or not. Or does nobody talk around here?

Don't take it personally. You'll notice that most of the User Album Showcase threads get few, if any, replies.

Despite some efforts to broaden things, I think this forum remains focused mostly on the mechanics of creating albums, rather than on their content. Photography sites tend to generate a lot more discussion about the images themselves.
