Hi.

Please, go here and try to clic on the icon's movie
http://marcbre.free.fr/Perso/PersoHtml/Europe/France/2009-09-12_Mesnil-AniversairePapi85Ans/slides/2009-09-12_Mesnil-Papi85Ans.html

A window will open, and nothing more happens.
If you want to see the movie, you have to stroke your Entry key on your keyboard.
Then you'll realize that the movie is not fully displayed but cuted to probably 640 pixels
The real size is 1280 x 720.

I have tested the same reaction with IE, Firefox, Google chrome & Opera.

Any idea ?

I wasn't able to test it because the video was loading much too slowly.
However, im PM's GUI you can change the dimension of videos. The default is 640x480px and this is what you see actually I think.

That would be a problem since the settings are valid for the whole album. You would need something like index.properties but it's not supported for video stuff.

I got the same blank screen you did. I was able to load the movie in a separate window, but it took over an hour to load. I would suggest making a smaller version of the movie and putting that into your Jalbum as a test.

With the years, I have changed my camera and my new one is now producing HD movies.
I can't imagine someone will stay with his first kind of movies for years.
Could you adapt PM so that it would take any kind of movies ?
Thanks for your help.

Thad.
I had a problem with my Internet connection.
After resetting, it is back to normal.
I think you could now download the movie in a reasonable time
Thanks for your interest.

Hi Dersou,

how this is handled by other skins? It would be fine to have something (more), used by other skins in the same way.

PM is the only skin I use...
I like it as I'm used to it and you have developed a lot of things for me (thanks so much).
Now, what I'm proposing seems, from my place, something just logical...
I understand it may implied a lot of work...
You'll tell me if it seems interesting and if you have time for it.
Thanks for your help.

Movies can be displayed in a different size from the one in which they were created. For example, scroll down below the text to see the movie at

http://www.john-s-allen.com/galleries/boston/Commonwealth%20Avenue/slides/MVI_5711.html

This was saved at a lower resolution than the size in which I am showing it, for faster downloading.

There is not a problem (other than some jaggies) with this as long as the aspect ratio is the same. The problem occurs if you have both the 3/4 standard and 16/9 HD format in the same folder. Then circles become ellipses, thin people look fat etc. You can choose only one aspect ratio for each folder (or is it each album?) Well, you could upload folders separately and link them.

Yes, it would be nice for PositionMap to allow different aspect ratios for different videos in the same folder, or to read them automatically from the video file (but not only automatically, as many video files are formatted wrong) .

One option (in video software, not in JAlbum) is to "pillarbox" or "letterbox" videos so that they display in the correct aspect ratio inside a frame that is wider, or taller.

To save space on my own site, and for convenient uploading and management, I would also like to see PositionMap able to embed videos stored on YouTube etc. Maybe this is possible but I'm not sure whether or how.

I see the problem and I think it's a JAlbum wide issue. JAlbum also allows only one dimension for all photos in an album. The same is true for videos but it's still the skin who takes into account these parameters but it should better be done by JAlbum as well.

Same applies to integrate youtube videos. Why not simpy drag & drop them on JAlbum's interface? It would be a pity that each skin should implement its own solution for that.
Of course, skins would need to update to support new media types but the interface should be defined by JAlbum once for all.

You could probably use a Custom UI to allow the user to set different dimensions for each video added to the album project. David's thread about it is here.

I haven't played with it myself, but I believe both ctwist and TomCee have explored it, and could help.

This is certainly a nice feature but it's the same problem I described above: each skin would need to implement its own solution to set individual image/video dimensions. That should be doable by JAlbum directly, not by a particular skin.
