<p>SHANGHAI'S OLD NEIGHBORHOODS<br />Shanghai's old traditional neighborhoods are rapidly disappearing in China's mad race to catch up with western economies and to show a bright, modern face to the world. This local community way of life is quickly being replaced by tall, sterile apartment buildings. Community street life is disappearing along with them. A few years ago, I lived in Shanghai right on the edge of one such old neighborhood, where I had the pleasure of wandering, watching, eating and shopping in the chaotic, bustling streets for 4 months. Sadly, these neighborhoods, bursting with charm and intrique, may soon disappear all together.
