<p>Doors - Madeira<br />Doorway to art heaven In the beautifucity of Funchal, a uniquely exquisite outdoor art exhibition has popped up in Rua de Santa Maria, a cobbled side street in the old town. The Madeira Art of Open Doors project is to open the doors of Funchal to the beauty of art and culture and reflects the splendor of the island. Old doors of houses and shops which were decayed and forgotten have been given new life by local artists who use the doors as their canvas. Many local people in the old town were concerned that the area was beginning to have a rundown appearance because the buildings were falling into disrepair. The idea was to liven up the place by decorating the old doorways and so selected local artists were asked if they would like to contribute to the colourful restoration of the ageing doors. Each artist was given a door and was free to create a piece of art of their choice.
