With jAlbum 9.3 we have made it easer to control who gets to know about your album updates and who gets to see your albums. Most people don't want to "tell the world" when they upload a family album and may have hesitated to "Publish" an album using jAlbum in the past. We hear you! With the changes made in the 9.3 release you have more detailed control on what should happen to an album you upload. You can have different settings for different albums too. A "Portfolio-style" album is probably something you want to be more public about.
When clicking the "Upload" button your are faced with an updated confirmation window which now includes a "Privacy" button:

Clicking the "Privacy" button brings up a new window.
By default it makes your album visible on your profile page (if you have a jAlbum account) and notifies your followers on jalbum.net about the album update. Your album is also added to the Recent albums list in the Explore section of jalbum.net.
Just deselect the options that you don't think suit your particular album. You may for instance make the album hidden from your profile page so only users that know the exact album URL can view them (doing so will disable the two other sharing options automatically).
The settings are stored with your album project so you only need to do this once. Pressing the "Save as default" button will make the current settings the default for future album projects.
You can enjoy these flexible sharing options even if you actually use another web hosting than jalbum.net. Nice isn't it? However, the last feature, the ability to password protect albums only apply to albums stored on jalbum.net. There are technical reasons behind this and not evil business reasons. Protecting other albums can be done but has to be done differently depending on the web server in use.
If you wish to change any of these settings for an already uploaded album, just press the "Upload" button again and make the changes you want and continue. jAlbum will realize that you have already uploaded the album and will only make the other changes, like adding or removing a password.
I hope you enjoy these these long awaited improvements to privacy control in jAlbum. If you have any questions or comments, just post them here.Sorry, it is our password mechanism that still doesn't work when you have a "&" in the album name. Rename the album, then it shall work.
I changed an existing album by adding a password in the privacy window. And I deselected the second and third option in the same window.
On my homepage I now see an album button with a lock sign. But when I click on it it opens without needing to enter a password. Someone else on a different computer can do the same. What did I do wrong?
If you get a blank page, either uninstall this version and all earlier versions of jAlbum and install again, or uninstall this version and get the version of jAlbum that requires Java from http://jalbum.net/software/download/ current/all-systems
David, I upgraded to 9.3 but it doesn't work. I only get a blank page. I use a 64-bits windows. Till now I had no problem. How can I eventually go back to the former version?
Bert
Yes, to remove a password, just upload again with a blank password. jAlbum is smart enough to figure out that nothing else has changed so this is pretty quick. You can also toggle the password status on the site or control the password of an album using jAlbum's Publish/Manage window (CTRL+M)
David,
How would you remove the protection? Re-upload (using Smart) but with no password?
Cheers,
Mark
